Morality In Atheism

"How can you be moral if you don't believe in god?" "Where does your morality come from?" Unfortunately, questions like these are all too common, and while I don't expect to change anyone's mind with this blog (most will probably skip it altogether), I still want to share my thoughts on morality. I can only speak for my own beliefs about morality, and not those of other atheists.

I grew up in a Christian home, so admittedly, some of the good stuff from there, I held onto. Stuff like peace, patience, love, kindness. But I honestly believe I would have come to those conclusions without the bible. I say this because I was raised around everything but those traits. I was raised to believe the bad sides of the bible; that we should still own slaves, and that certain people are more deserving of certain rights than others. Despite what I was taught, I still chose peace, patience, love, and kindness for everyone.

I see other people as equal to me, as just as important, or unimportant as me. I see animals as deserving of love and respect. I see society in need of unity. To me, that is what morality is about. Unity.

Morals change over time. They should. A quick look at the bible should show you that. There are laws in there about how you should treat your slaves, and "the times were different" is exactly my point. Morals change. Society evolves and morals evolve with it.

And to me, evolution is my primary driving factor. Evolution is why I believe in morality, evolution is why I believe in unity and love and compassion. Evolution got us where we are today. The science and technology, the information, all of it, is because we evolved to be able to do it all.

I believe that if we adopt the morals of love, compassion, and unity, we will see our species continue to evolve. If we can't come together as a species, further evolution will not happen, and we will eventually cease to be the Apex species.

In addition to evolution, I think it's important to love and support others, simply because it's the right thing to do. Being a shitty person isn't good for anyone. Love others, treat people with kindness, and don't be a dick.

I could continue with all that's wrong in the world, that I think is morally wrong, and how I'd like to fix it and why I think changes are what will drive us forward. But I will leave you with this; an asteroid took out the dinosaurs, and there was nothing they could do to stop it. Unlike the dinosaurs, we are technologically advanced and can see our demise coming, and we have the capability to change things. Yet no one wants to do anything to help save our species.

In summary, I believe in treating others with love, kindness, and compassion. I believe evolution is why we need to adopt these morals, and I think if we don't adopt these morals, we are not going to continue to evolve as a species.
